Reading for the Read-a-Thon

Check us out reading for the read-a-thon! Please be sure to track your minutes online. The information was sent home to you last week. I've been giving minutes out for students who are active listeners during story time, and when they are reading to self or with a partner! Log in to see how many minutes they've earned at school so far!

A Week of Visitors!

Last week was filled with visitors from the community! On Monday, Mrs. Rizzi's (kindergarten teacher at Roxbury) mother who is an author came to visit. She showed us two books that she wrote and explained the writing process.

On Wednesday, Stamford firefighters came to discuss fire safety. Each kindergarten class got to sit in the truck. The firefighters also brought  cool fire hats!

On Thursday, we had readers from Kiwanis come, and the dental hygienist, Ms. Tony. She showed us the correct way to brush our teeth. Each kindergartener got a copy of the Tooth Book and a new toothbrush!

We ended our busy week with a marshmallow project for the letter M!

What a week!!

Looking Back on Our Week

Here's a peek at last week in Room 210!

We learned all about the letter Dd. We made a list of things that start with the letter D, and used dot markers to make a D.

We were "digging" for D and C objects in our sensory bucket. I asked students to close their eyes, feel around and pull out an object. Then, they listened for the first sound in the word to decide if it was an object that began with C or D. They loved it!

We finished our D week by reading If you Give a Dog a Donut, while eating doughnuts!

In math we had our first week of real math stations! We had one station at my table, one at Mrs. D's table and one independent station with no teacher! My tots did a fabulous job. Please use dream box at home if you have not already!

In reading and writing we read alphabet and farm books, and looked for punctuation. Ask your child to find a period, question mark or exclamation point!

On Friday, we had a picture perfect day for our first field trip to the Nature Center! We explored all of the animals, got to play on the huge playground, learned how to make apple cider and had a picnic lunch.

This is what I call a fun Friday!!

Thank you to all the families who sent in their family projects. They look awesome in the hallway, and the other children at Roxbury are loving them!

All About Apples!

Thank you to the Campo, Bueckman and Taylor families for sending in apple sauce, apple bars, and apple cider doughnuts for the class to sample during our apple unit.

In reading, I read fiction and NF books with apple facts or apples as characters, how silly! We explored alphabet and number books such as Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and  Chicka Chicka 1,2,3. We practiced "shopping" for classroom books to read, and learned how to partner read! We sat elbow to elbow and knee to knee with one book. My tots loved it!!

In math we counted, practiced  writing numbers  1,2 and 3, and went on Dreambox for the first time in the computer lab! Dream box is easily accessible at home on a tablet or computer.

Here are some of our apple math centers from the week.

This is Sheza and Francesca using playdoh to form letters and count!

This is the apple tree counting game where students had to identify the number and count that many apples on the tree!

In phonics we learned all about the letter O! On our last day with the letter O we used, CheeriO's to trace the letter... and have a little snack! Look at these pros using liquid glue the correct way!

We ended our busy week with a rest time show! Since we rested nicely Monday-Thursday, we earned  an episode of Pete the Cat!
