All About The Very Hungry Caterpillar!

This week was filled with Eric Carle's well known children's book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. We read the story and wrote about how we could connect to the caterpillar in the story. To help us brainstorm our ideas we did a "turn and talk" with a partner. This is where we listen to our partners idea, and then share ours! When I say, "Turn Back!" we all turn away from our partner and share out.

Later that day we became artists and painted a large caterpillar just like Eric Carle. We used materials such as bubble wrap, combs and sponges to add texture to our painting.

We also sequenced and retold the story as a class. We used a pocket chart to move around the parts of the story.

Then, we cut and glued the steps in order.

My tots brought this home with them to read and share with you! You also received a copy of our class book we finished. I hope you enjoyed our book; we sure worked hard.

In math we played a new game where we had to count by 10's. This is our new center of the week.
At my table, we worked on addition and different ways to make ten.

Using manipulatives and ten frames, we were able to find different partners of  ten!

Savannah was our Celebrity of the Week! She told the class her favorite food is mac and cheese, and she loves to go to the park!

Week at a Glance

The winter weather finally got the best of my tots! With lots of friends out sick (including me) this week felt like a game of catch up. We have finally finished our class book and voted on a title. We decided on, The Penguin Who Needs Help. We worked so hard to put this together. Each student will receive a copy of the class book to share with their family!

We are loving Eric Carle stories and informational text about polar animals. Nothing makes me happier than seeing my tots with a book in their hand that they are interested in!
Dante and Steffany enjoying Eric Carle Big Books!

Rebecca and Juan in the reading corner browsing winter stories.

In math, we played Dreambox on the iPads, and continued to work on addition and subtraction skills.

In honor of this large snow storm we are experience right now, we ended our week with one of my favorite stories,
The kids loved it and can't wait to make snow globes next week!

The Celebrations Continue!

We had our January Character Assembly today. Look at how many of my Roxstar students got awards today! If you see your chid in this picture that means they had perfect attendance for the first marking period, read over winter break, or got a character charm! Some of my tots got more than one award!

Recap of Our Week!

This week in Room 202 we worked so hard! We continued with our Eric Carle author study and integrated non-fiction text into the unit. We read, Have You Seen My Cat? and Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? by Eric Carle, and read non-fiction text about polar bears. We brainstormed a list of 13 facts we learned about polar bears, and wrote about it!

Continuing with the arctic theme, we chose a penguin as the main character in our Eric Carle inspired class book.So far we've got a penguin who lives in the North Pole and doesn't know how to swim! As the story continues, I will add updates to the blog.

In math, we met Andy Addition's best friend, "Susie Subtraction"!

We learned a number line can help us with counting, adding and subtracting!

We finished out our week learning about Martin Luther King. We watched a short video on MLK and discussed what a hero is. We drew pictures of our heroes and wrote about them.

Freya was the Celebrity of the Week! She brought in her slug stuffed animal to share with the class. She told us her favorite food is cupcakes, and  when she's not at school, she loves to go to Stew Leonards!

No school- Monday for Martin Luther King Day

Many children have used up their spare clothes at school. Please send in another set in case of an accident.

Please send your child to school with school every day. We no longer have back up snack in the classroom.

Please be sure to complete the journal page for the book-in-a-bag. Your child should use their book-in-a-bag book to complete the writing. Please encourage your child to sound out the words on their own. This is going to strengthen their writing and letter sounds.

Enjoy the long weekend!

Scholastic Book Order

A scholastic book order was sent home today in your child's folder. If you are interested in placing an order, please send money in by Friday, January 15th. You can also place an order online, using the web address, https://orders.scholastic.com/MB22T.

Happy Reading!

Ice Cream Party!

Room 202 has worked together since September to earn "links". Earning links is not always an easy task. Some examples of ways to receive a link are compliments for behavior in the hall, 100% homework and book-in-a-bag participation and showing character traits when no one is watching! Our links officially touched the floor last week and what better way to celebrate than an ice cream party!

We enjoyed vanilla, chocolate and cookie dough ice cream, topped with sprinkles, chocolate sauce, marshmallows and whipped cream!

A big cheer for my tots! Keep up the good work!

Our First Week of 2016!

Happy New Year! We kicked off our year with a jam packed week! We wrote new year's resolutions for 2016. The tots had ambition goals such as, learning how to make sushi, and playing the harmonica!

We began our Author Study Unit on Eric Carle. All of my tots LOVE the stories and are so excited to read them. We read, Do you Want to be My Friend and The Grouchy Ladybug. We worked on making personal connections to stories, and wrote about a time we felt grouchy.

In math, we continued to work on those tricky teen numbers and addition. Next week I will introduce the number line, and we will use it to add and subtract.

We began our week with Christian's 6th birthday and ended our week with Sakyra's birthday!

Ashley was our Celebrity of the Week! She brought in her snuggly dolphin stuffed animal named, Dolphie that she got in Bermuda!

Lastly, the frigid temperatures this week kicked off our topic on winter! We wrote about things we like to do in the winter, and made snowmen today.

Looking ahead…

Next week's sight words: he, she **I will send home an updated list of sight words we have done so far, and how many your child knows. Please keep practicing these at home. The more sight words they know, the more fluent they will become in their reading.**
