Halloween Fun!

This past week we spent lots of time reading Halloween stories while learning who the  author and illustrators are. We used Halloween word cards to read sentences with sight words we've learned. Lastly we had special Halloween centers! We mixed literacy and math together to make our centers fun but educational as well!

Center 1- Graphing Spooky Fruit Snacks!
At this centers the students sorted their fruit snacks, graphed their results and discussed which had the most and the least. Their favorite part- eating the fruit snacks!!

 Center 2- Monster ABCS
Students had to pick a card and match the lowercase letter on their recording sheet. Whoever had the most letters at the end, won!

Center 3- Pumpkin Decorating!
We each got pumpkins with numbers on them. We used jewels and stickers to decorate the pumpkins to help with our fine motor skills, and number ID!

Center 4- Spider Counting!
We used manipulatives to count and match the number on the spider webs. Once the students counted all of the objects, there was as spider counting recording sheet where they got to color with markers!
Center 5- Pumpkins on a Fence Adding!
Students got to use spooky Halloween stickers to count pumpkins and bats. Then, they added their pumpkins and bats. This was followed by a candy corn letter sound puzzle!

Check back soon for pictures from the awesome Roxbury Halloween Parade!

Halloween Parade

FRIENDLY REMINDER...

Roxbury's Halloween parade is Friday at 2:00! All parents are invited to the parade!

If you offered to send in items for our Halloween snack and craft before the parade, feel free to send them in tomorrow, or Friday morning!

***Please send your child's Halloween costume to school in a bag. We will change into our costumes right before the parade***

 See you there!!

Beginning, Middle and End

We read the story, Wemberly Worried on Monday. In this story, the character Wemberly worries all the time! We learned what it means to worry about something, and then made personal connections to the story.
On Tuesday, we retold the story using our first graphic organizer. We drew pictures of events that happened in the beginning, middle and end of the story!

We worked extra hard on our drawings and included details in our pictures!
We are learning to be authors and illustrators! My tots rock!

H is for Halloween!

We started this week off by learning about fire safety and nocturnal animals. We ended this week by learning about pumpkins and Halloween!

We continued to look for punctuation marks in our reading, and made connections to stories.

In math we practiced writing the number 5, and were introduced to our newest math center, Dreambox on the iPad!

In phonics, we learned the letter H. We used Halloween stickers to decorate our letter of the week. Here are some pictures of the beautiful master pieces we made this week!

Character Assembly

We had our first Character Assembly today where we honored 5 students who show good character traits! I am so proud of my tots for being wonderful role models and making good choices, even when no one is watching!

And a big THANK YOU to everyone who has sent play-doh in! My tots are happy to have new, soft play-doh to work with!

Fire Safety!

October is Fire Safety Month! We spent some time last week reviewing fire safety rules, and reading books about firefighters. On Tuesday, we were lucky enough to have several Stamford firefighters come to Roxbury to teach us more about fire safety! We practiced stopping, dropping and rolling, and even got to go in the truck!

Our favorite part was when Fireman Dan got on the ladder!!

We had so much fun learning about fire safety! The firefighters wanted all of my tots to go home and share the information with their family, and have a practice fired drill at home!

Dreambox

Not only have we implemented RazKids into our literacy centers, but now we've done the same with Dreambox during math centers!

Remember, Dreambox can be used at home on a computer or iPad! If you have questions on how to access the app or webpage, feel free to email me. :)

Today's temperature was cold for sure, but in the words of Pete the Cat, it was "All Good!" We didn't let the temperature change bother us, instead, we had a party in the leaves!

Ipads!

This was our first week implementing iPads into our literacy centers. We used the app RazKids that can be accessed at home as well. All of my tots were so excited about the iPads they could hardly wait till it was their day to use them!

During reading and writing workshop we learned about the setting in a story and who the characters are. We read fun stories like Z if For Moose, and Pete the Cat Rockin' in my School Shoes! We drew pictures of the settings in the stories and some of the characters.

In math we worked with shapes and practiced writing the number 4.

Looking Ahead…
Next week's letter: M/H
Next week's words: Review it, today and introduce we, go

Please continue to review letters and sight words with your child at home!

Mark your calendars...

READ, READ, READ!!

During our reader's workshop we've been exploring punctuation marks, and finding where sentences begin and end. We have also been working on our stamina of sitting quietly with a story, and reading. Reading in kindergarten can be looking at pictures, looking for letters we know, or sight words of the week. Today, we did it for 5 minutes! Everyone got a carpet square and found a comfy spot. My tots looked like first graders!!

Please return both homework worksheets tomorrow. If everyone returns their homework completed,    we get a link!
